Robin Hood Invitational

Date:  Friday, July 24 at 3:30 pm

Purpose:  To promote the growth of competitive diving, good sportsmanship and camaraderie among divers in the MCDL.

Site:  Robin Hood Swim Club, 225 Mowbray Rd., Silver Spring, MD.

Entries:  Entries are open to all MCDL team members who are NOT diving in their Divisional Meet.  A completed Dual Meet diving form will serve as an official entry.   Coaches or team reps should give their completed and signed dive sheets to me (Nancy Ale RH team rep) at the scoring table as soon as they arrive at the pool.

Meet Support:  We try to fill as many spots as possible with RH parents, but we do need help.  We would appreciate it if each participating team would send one or two volunteers to the scoring table well before the start of the meet so that we can “fill in the blanks” of the work schedule.  Please tell your parent volunteers that they can sign up to work at only one event, or stay to help for the whole meet!

Rules:  Rules and order of dives follow the MCDL handbook.

Events:     1 & 2.         6 & U (follows the current 8 & U dive list)

                   3 & 4.         8 & U (same as current dive list)

5 & 6.         10 & U (current dive list)

                   7 & 8.         11-12 (current dive list)

                   9 & 10.       13-14 (current dive list)

11 & 12.     15-18 (current dive list)

Awards:  Ribbons for all participants in order of place will be

presented after each event with photo opportunities following

the presentations.  No team scores will be kept.

Directions & Parking:  The directions to Robin Hood as

printed in the handbook are correct.  Parking is available in

the RH lot for those arriving early.  If that is full and there are

no more parking spots available on the street (please park

only on the pool side of the street), we ask that you park in

the Westover Elementary School parking lot.  To get to

Westover, follow Locksley Lane down the hill to the

school on the left.  To get to RH, observe the large white

house across Locksley from Westover.  To the right of that

house is a blacktop path which leads to RH pool.

Concessions:  As usual, we will have a well-stocked

concession stand which will open shortly before 3 pm and

will remain open throughout the meet.

Warm-Ups:  For 6&U and 8&U divers, warm-ups will begin at 3:00.  The meet will begin promptly at 3:30.  Warm-ups for 9-10’s will follow the 8 & U Boys event.  Warm-ups for 11 and over will follow the 9-10 Boys event.

Contact:  Please e-mail me at nanelale@aol.com with the number of divers who will be representing your team so that we can order the right number of ribbons.  Also, if your parent volunteers know when they can work, let me know that as well so we can be as organized as possible.

This is a fun meet where we hope the divers will end their season with encouragement and perhaps be inspired to pursue the sport during the winter months.  Thank you for your help in making it possible.  We look forward to seeing all of you again this year.

The Divisional Championship Meet will be held Sunday, July 26. Each team in our Division enters two divers per event. Eight and unders do not dive in Divisionals. Robin Hood will again host the Robin Hood Invitational meet, open to those who do not compete in Divisionals. This well-attended and very fun meet is scheduled for Friday, July 24, beginning at 3:30 p.m. Well over 100 divers are expected to participate from the 25 pools that belong to the Montgomery County Dive League.

Volunteers are needed for each meet. We ask that each family sign up to help at two meets. Please plan to stay for the entire meet for the two meets you have volunteered to help with. We will also be asking each family to donate food items for home meets. The money raised goes right back to the team in the form of trophies and equipment.

Parent Clinics will be held in June at several area pools to teach the mechanics of tablework, scoring and judging. (See calendar below for dates, times and locations.) Recording and tallying scores, announcing and ribbon writing will all be taught during the table work session. Regarding judging, the four parts of the dive (approach, take-off, flight through the air and entry) will be discussed at length. Divers will perform dives that will then be analyzed in detail. This is an opportunity to gain valuable experience on how to break down a dive into its component parts and have fun at the same time. We would like more parents to become familiar with judging so that we can draw upon a wider range of people to judge. Even if you are not currently interested in becoming a judge, attendance at one of these clinics will increase your understanding of the mechanics of good diving, thus increasing your appreciation of the sport. Upon completion of a clinic, parents will be certified to work at summer dive meets for three years.
