Hello
Friends, Family, Robin Hood Families, Friends of
Family (and those accidentally copied on this
e-mail)....
We all know someone
who has been impacted by cancer. While the
circumstances may be all different, the one
similarity is that all of these brave people fought
for their lives. Please help us keep up this fight
and bring an end to this disease.
On the evening of
Friday, August 19th, we are holding a fundraiser at
the Robin Hood Swim Club to raise money to benefit
The Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at
Johns Hopkins. More specifically, the donations
will be directed to the Ludwig Center for Cancer
Genetics and Therapeutics and Dr. Bert Vogelstein to
further identify and characterize the genes that
cause cancer and based on this information, to build
targeted therapies for cancer patients.
Raising money and
awareness for cancer research and treatment is our
primary goal...but it isn’t the only goal! We want
to remember and celebrate the lives of those we’ve
lost to cancer, and celebrate with those who have
survived this terrible disease. No better way to
celebrate than to laugh and have fun!!
Here is a general outline of the event:
We want this to be unique and fun for all.
Therefore, the event will start at 8pm on Friday
August 19 and will be a twelve hour swim relay
ending at 8am on Saturday. We plan to have food,
music, and activities throughout the night, so
please come join us for the fun, regardless of
whether you plan to swim. We would like to have at
least one swimmer in the water at all times in relay
fashion. This is NOT a race, each swimmer can swim
as many or as few laps as he/she likes. Swimmer can
don Speedos, trunks, tuxedos, a chicken costume,
etc...it doesn’t matter. The more outlandish the
swim attire, the better. The goal is to get as many
people involved as possible and have fun. No matter
what your skill level, we would love to have you
attend at any time during the event to show your
support.
Here’s how you can participate/volunteer for the
event:
Swimmers –
Visit this website to sign up for swim time slots: www.SignUpGenius.com/go/swim219
We need people to
volunteer for a 15 minute swim period. You can swim
all 15 minutes (or longer) by yourself or form a
team to comprise the 15 minute time block. Please
sign up online or e-mail us with the time you would
like. Again, we would like to have at least one
person in the water at all times, but we can have
more!!
Non-swimmers –
Visit this website for contributions of food/drink: www.SignUpGenius.com/go/munchies20
We will be serving
food and beverages throughout the night, so if you
can cook or contribute, please let us know. Enter
your food contribution online or bring them to the
event at any time!
All –
we are planning to end the festivities with a
celebration breakfast, so please contribute or come
join us Saturday morning after 7am.
Do you want to donate to this great cause? Here’s
how:
Swimmers -
Please spread the word and ask for sponsors to
donate a set amount to “Team Robin Hood” (not based
on number of laps). They can use the link below to
donate to “Team Robin Hood”.
Non-swimmers -
Please use the link below and donate to “Team Robin
Hood”.
NOTE: For tax purposes, contributions will be
recognized and receipts will be issued individually.
Team Robin Hood is just the means to collect funds
and designate them to a specific area within Johns
Hopkins.
All donations can be made directly to Johns
Hopkins University using the following
link:
https://jhweb.dev.jhu.edu/eforms/form.do?formId=10865
When
completing the online donation form, please
highlight the circle “I
wish to support a particular physician or area of
cancer research” and
then type “Team Robin Hood” in the box labeled “Specific
physician or area of cancer research”.
The donation will then be tagged and directed to
the Ludwig Center. The donation is tax deductible
and JHU will send individual receipts for tax
purposes. With donations of $100 or more, we will
light a personalized votive candle in memory or in
celebration of a cancer survivor. We hope to have
enough votive candles to outline the pool throughout
the night. If you wish to give a votive candle in
honor or memory of an individual, please enter the Honoree’s
Name in
the“Giving
In Honor or In Memory Of” section
of the online donation form.
